An exciting opportunity in refugee support

Open Harbour Refugee Association (OHRA), a volunteer-run non-profit organization based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is looking for a dedicated Settlement Coordinator to support our work assisting refugees to settle in Halifax. We are currently sponsoring our sixth family and hope to help a seventh family soon.

About OHRA

OHRA believes that everyone—no matter where they were born or where they live—has a right to a safe home. We support our sponsored families financially during their first year, as well as offer friendship and emotional support. Among other tasks, we help newcomers:
  • Find safe housing that meets their needs
  • Access language training and enrol children in school
  • Learn about Canadian culture and values
  • Find a job or job training

About the Settlement Coordinator Position

The Settlement Coordinator is a shared role between two people. You will be working with the current Settlement Coordinator who has been a part of OHRA for many years. Among other responsibilities, the Settlement Coordinators:
  • Work with the chair and treasurer to prepare for the settlement of newcomers
  • Coordinate the work of group members responsible for settlement tasks, e.g. finding furniture, introducing newcomers to the bus system and community, and setting up bank accounts
  • Ensure the completion of settlement tasks
  • Provide one-on-one services and support to our families
  • Facilitate information sharing among members
Necessary experience and skills:
  • A strong understanding of Canadian refugee sponsorship programs and the needs of newcomers (or willingness to learn)
  • Experience in the settlement and/or community work sectors
  • An ability to effectively coordinate the tasks of a small team of volunteers
  • Experience in working with clients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Strong communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Confidence using Zoom, Google Meet, email, WhatsApp, Google Drive
  • Ability to actively and consistently fulfil responsibilities
Term: Starting in October 2024, the Settlement Coordinator will serve a two-year term and is eligible for renewal. Time Commitment: Three to five hours per week. Some daytime availability is required. Monthly meetings are held on Sunday evenings over Google Meet with an annual general meeting in person and occasional group events.
