An exciting opportunity in refugee support
Open Harbour Refugee Association (OHRA), a volunteer-run non-profit organization based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is looking for a dedicated Chair to help lead our work assisting refugees to settle in Halifax. We are currently sponsoring our sixth family and hope to help a seventh family soon.
About OHRA
OHRA believes that everyone—no matter where they were born or where they live—has a right to a safe home. We support our sponsored families financially during their first year, as well as offer friendship and emotional support. Among other tasks, we help newcomers:
- find safe housing that meets their needs
- access language training and enrol children in school
- learn about Canadian culture and values
- find a job or job training
Our directors and members are passionate about helping refugees and take an active role in OHRA’s work. Many of our approximately 15 members have been part of the organization since it began in 2015.
About the Chair Position
The Chair is responsible for the effectiveness of the board of directors, coordinating the work of our directors and members for the benefit of the families we help.
Necessary experience and skills:
- Commitment to welcoming and supporting newcomers and the work of OHRA
- Leadership or management roles in business or non-profit organizations, or having served on a board
- Understanding of Canadian refugee sponsorship programs and the needs of newcomers (or willingness to learn)
- Strong communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
- Ability to lead challenging discussions and build consensus
- Confidence using Zoom, Google Meet, email, WhatsApp, Google Drive
- Ability to actively and consistently fulfil responsibilities
Term: Starting in January 2025, the Chair will serve a two-year term and is eligible for renewal.
Time Commitment: Three to five hours a week. Monthly meetings are held on Sunday evenings over Zoom.

We privately sponsor UNHCR refugees to Nova Scotia and support them financially and socially for one year after arrival. OHRA is a non-profit society under the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stocks.
