We believe that everyone – no matter where they were born or where they live – has a right to a safe home. We want to help as many refugee families as we can find that safe home here in Halifax.
Canada has a long history of helping refugees and we’re excited to be a small part of that. We know the refugee crisis is not something our one small group can fix, but we aren’t alone. Many other groups across Canada have stepped up to help refugees as well. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and help change lives.
So what exactly are you doing anyhow?
We are resettling refugees in Halifax through the Canadian government’s private refugee sponsorship program and in partnership with ISANS.
To do so, we raise the money we need to match the government’s funding to support the newcomers during their first year in Canada.
Fundraising is only one part of our responsibility as sponsors. We also commit to giving the family or individual practical and social support during their first year – and helping them make Halifax their home!
Our first family – a Syrian family of four – arrived at the end of February 2016. It’s been an honour – and a lot of fun! – getting to know them.
For our second sponsorship we welcomed Mohamed, an older gentleman from Eritrea, in April 2017. He’s embraced his new life in Canada with hard work and enthusiasm!
We are planning our third sponsorship for later in 2018 or 2019. Stay updated on our fundraising efforts by subscribing to our enewsletter.
